Gunfire erupts behind Southeast DC building leaving one man dead another fighting for life
Washington, DC – A New Year’s Eve shooting in Southeast DC left one man dead and another critically wounded after gunfire broke out behind a residential building on 37th Street, police said.
Just after 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sixth District officers responded to reports of a shooting in the rear of the 200 block of 37th Street SE. When they arrived, they found two men with gunshot wounds. Both were rushed to area hospitals by DC Fire and EMS crews.
One of the victims, identified as 31-year-old Darnell Bassett of Northeast DC, was pronounced dead after lifesaving efforts failed. The second man remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
Detectives have not released any information on possible suspects or a motive. The area behind the building where the shooting occurred was cordoned off for several hours as police canvassed for evidence and witnesses.
