Man arrested in violent Southeast DC carjacking after dragging woman from vehicle
WASHINGTON, DC – A 24-year-old man was arrested Saturday after allegedly yanking a woman from her car during an early morning carjacking and then fleeing in the stolen vehicle through Southeast Washington.
According to police, the incident unfolded around 4:18 a.m. on October 25 in the 2400 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE. The victim was trying to exit her car when the suspect approached, opened her door, and ordered her to get out. When she refused, the man forcibly removed her from the driver’s seat and sped off in the vehicle.
Later the same day, officers from the Seventh District located the stolen vehicle occupied in the 2600 block of Bowen Road SE. Following an on-scene investigation, Jamari Prophet, 24, of Southeast, DC, was arrested.
Prophet was initially taken into custody on charges of Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle and two outstanding bench warrants. Detectives later connected him to the earlier carjacking and charged him with Unarmed Carjacking under a DC Superior Court warrant.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
