Washington, DC — A man was found shot to death inside a North Capitol Street apartment early Friday morning, triggering a homicide investigation just days before the holiday weekend in Northeast DC.

Around 2:37 a.m., officers from the Fifth District responded to reports of a shooting at an apartment in the 1000 block of North Capitol Street NE. Inside the unit, they discovered a man unconscious and unresponsive, suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Emergency personnel from DC Fire and EMS arrived shortly after but were unable to revive the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim has been identified as 44-year-old Melvin Saunders of Northeast, DC. Investigators have not disclosed whether a suspect is in custody or if they believe the shooting was targeted or random.

This marks another fatal shooting in the area as DC continues to confront gun violence throughout several neighborhoods. Police have not released any details regarding a motive or possible suspects and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
