Woman killed in Landover crash after stolen car slams into her vehicle police say
Landover, MD – A 35-year-old woman from Washington, D.C., was killed Tuesday afternoon when a stolen vehicle carrying four juveniles ran a red light and struck her car in Prince George’s County, police confirmed.
The fatal crash happened around 3:50 p.m. on August 26 near the intersection of Sheriff Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Highway. Investigators say officers from Seat Pleasant had spotted the stolen car, first reported missing on August 22, and followed it from a safe distance without initiating a pursuit.
According to police, the stolen vehicle accelerated northbound on Sheriff Road, ran a red light, and collided with a car driven by Shaunte Denise Canty, 35, who was traveling eastbound. Canty was pronounced dead at the scene.
A child passenger in Canty’s vehicle was seriously injured but is expected to survive. Of the four juveniles in the stolen vehicle, three were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, while one was taken into police custody.
Detectives are working with the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office to determine charges against the juveniles, who may also be tied to other crimes involving the stolen car.
