Silver Spring, MD – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a nationwide safety alert warning pet owners to immediately stop feeding eight lots of Raaw Energy raw dog food after testing revealed contamination with several harmful bacteria, including Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella, and Campylobacter jejuni. One sample also tested positive for E. coli O157, a dangerous strain that can cause severe illness in both pets and humans.
The advisory, released January 23, 2026, follows an investigation by the Connecticut and New Jersey Departments of Agriculture after a consumer complaint involving a dog illness. Officials collected and tested eight unopened samples of Raaw Energy dog food, and all eight tested positive for one or more pathogenic bacteria.
Raaw Energy products are sold online and distributed directly to customers for in-person pickup. The food is packaged frozen in 2-pound or 5-pound clear plastic tubes sealed with metal clips and shipped in brown cardboard boxes containing ten tubes. Each package is marked with a white label showing the product’s flavor, ingredients, and date code.
The FDA has recommended a recall, but as of this week, Raaw Energy has not initiated an adequate recall of the affected products. Consumers who purchased Raaw Energy food are urged to check date codes and immediately dispose of any product on the FDA’s list of affected lots.
Health officials warn that these bacteria can infect both animals and humans. People and pets exposed to the contaminated food may experience diarrhea, vomiting, fever, abdominal cramps, or, in severe cases, bloodstream infections. The FDA advises consumers to sanitize all bowls, utensils, and surfaces that came into contact with the product and wash hands thoroughly after handling.
