CRANFORD, NJ – A quiet Glenwood Road neighborhood was shaken early Sunday morning when three suspects broke into a home and fled after being startled by the family dog.
The incident occurred around 4:57 a.m., according to the Cranford Police Department, which responded to a report of a residential burglary and attempted vehicle theft.
Authorities say the suspects, who entered the home while residents were inside, ran off in a dark, mid-sized sedan — possibly a BMW — after the dog began barking.
Key Points
- Three suspects entered a Cranford home early Sunday morning before fleeing
- A dark BMW believed to be linked to the burglary later fled from police
- Authorities warn of a rise in high-end vehicle thefts across Union County
Suspect vehicle spotted and fled police
Not long after the break-in, a patrol unit on Columbia Avenue located a dark BMW matching the suspects’ vehicle. Officers attempted to stop it, but the car sped away at a high rate of speed. Investigators believe it may be the same vehicle involved in the Glenwood Road burglary.
Related vehicle burglary reported nearby
Later that morning, a resident on Dunham Avenue reported their BMW had been entered overnight. Surveillance video from that incident showed a dark BMW pulling alongside the victim’s car around the same time as the earlier burglary, further linking the two cases.
Police warn of trend targeting luxury cars
Cranford Police said the town and surrounding Union County communities have experienced a noticeable rise in high-end vehicle thefts, particularly targeting BMWs and similar makes. Investigators are working with neighboring jurisdictions to track the group responsible.
Authorities are urging residents to remove key fobs from their vehicles, keep doors locked, and ensure home security cameras are functioning properly.
Residents with information or surveillance footage are asked to contact the Cranford Police Department at 908-272-2222.
