Newark, NJ – A juvenile was hospitalized after a shooting erupted Monday afternoon near the intersection of Broad Street and Market Street, one of downtown Newark’s busiest corridors.
Police were dispatched just before 2:15 p.m. following reports of shots fired. Officers arriving at the scene found the juvenile suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. The victim was transported to University Hospital, where the injury was reported to be non-life-threatening.
Detectives secure scene after firearm recovered
As officers secured the area, investigators detained one male and one female for questioning in connection with the shooting. Authorities have not announced whether either person will face charges.
Police also recovered a firearm at the scene, which detectives are examining as part of the investigation. Crime scene personnel remained in the area Monday afternoon gathering evidence and speaking with witnesses.
Market Street partially closed during investigation
A portion of Market Street remained closed while detectives processed the scene and worked to determine what led to the gunfire. Officials have not released information about a possible motive or whether the victim knew the individuals who were detained.
The investigation remains active, and additional details are expected as Newark police continue their investigation.
