Edgewater man charged with murder after 76-year-old woman found dead in home

EDGEWATER, MD – A 72-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder after a woman was found dead with signs of trauma inside their shared Edgewater residence Thursday morning, Anne Arundel County Police announced.

Officers responded around 8:00 a.m. to the 400 block of Linden Avenue following a report of an unresponsive female. Upon arrival, police discovered 76-year-old Johanna Gibbs with visible trauma to her body. Emergency responders from the county fire department pronounced her dead at the scene.

Detectives from the Anne Arundel County Police Homicide Unit took over the investigation and were assisted by forensic technicians who processed the scene. Gibbs’ body was transported to the Office of the State Medical Examiner for an autopsy to officially determine the cause and manner of death.

Investigators quickly identified Bruce William Dunham, 72, of Edgewater, as a suspect. Police say Dunham was Gibbs’ boyfriend and lived with her at the Linden Avenue residence where the homicide occurred. He was arrested and formally charged with her murder.

Authorities have not disclosed further details regarding the motive or specific injuries, pending results from the autopsy.
