Electrical Fire, Blown Transformer Ignite Multiple Vehicles in Hackensack

A transformer failure and downed power lines sparked an early Wednesday morning fire that spread to multiple vehicles, prompting road closures as firefighters waited for utility crews to shut off electricity.

Hackensack, NJ – An electrical fire fueled by a blown transformer and downed power lines damaged multiple vehicles early Wednesday morning near the intersection of Prospect Avenue and Berry Street, according to the City of Hackensack Fire Department.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene around 6 a.m., where they encountered energized power lines and several vehicles engulfed in flames. The hazardous conditions forced crews to wait for Public Service Electric & Gas (PSE&G) to disconnect power before they could fully extinguish the fire.

Fire department urged public to avoid area

In an update posted on social media, the Hackensack Fire Department advised motorists and residents to stay clear of the area while emergency crews worked.

“HFD Update: Avoid the area of Prospect Ave and Berry St. Active fire due to downed power lines and blown transformer. Companies are awaiting PSEG to cut the power,” the department said.

Video released by the Hackensack Fire Department showed flames shooting from electrical equipment while multiple parked vehicles burned nearby. Thick smoke rose over the scene as firefighters maintained a safe distance until the electrical hazard could be eliminated.

Investigation into cause continues

Officials have not reported any injuries, and the extent of the damage to the vehicles has not been released.

Authorities have not said what caused the transformer and utility pole to fail. The incident remains under investigation, and utility crews worked to restore service and secure the area Wednesday morning.

Electrical fires involving energized power lines present significant dangers for both emergency responders and the public. Fire officials routinely advise people to stay away from downed power lines and assume they are live until utility crews confirm they have been de-energized.
