Essex woman’s last-minute $5 ticket decision leads to $50,000 lottery win
ESSEX, MD – A Baltimore County mother ended up winning $50,000 from a scratch-off ticket she almost didn’t buy, after a spur-of-the-moment gas stop led her to the Essex Fuel Mart on Eastern Boulevard.
The woman, a warehouse manager who claimed her prize under the alias “Grateful & Blessed,” told lottery officials she wasn’t planning to stop for gas on Nov. 6 — and certainly wasn’t planning on buying a $5 ticket. But with her tank running low, she pulled into the station and was drawn to the store’s lottery display after filling up.
She initially purchased two higher-priced scratch-offs that delivered small wins. Then, with just $5 left in her lottery budget, she debated whether to spend it or save it. In the end, she decided to try her luck on a single Let’s Make A Deal scratch-off — and hit the game’s $50,000 top prize.
She waited until she got home to scratch the ticket, but says she was so anxious to see the results that she played it while parked in her driveway. Upon realizing she had won, she broke down in tears.
The Let’s Make A Deal® scratch-off launched in April with seven top prizes of $50,000. Following this win, just one top prize remains unclaimed. The game still offers additional prizes including three at $5,000 and eight at $1,000.
The Essex Fuel Mart, located at 220 Eastern Boulevard, will receive a $500 retailer bonus for selling the winning ticket.
