GAITHERSBURG, MD – A 22-year-old Silver Spring man was shot and killed Friday afternoon after an argument with a relative escalated into violence on a downtown street.

The shooting happened around 2:07 p.m. near Richmond Avenue and Fenton Street, where police found the victim lying in the roadway with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Authorities identified the victim as Babacar Mbengue of Silver Spring, who was pronounced dead after being transported to a nearby hospital.

Argument in Tesla led to deadly shooting

According to detectives with the Montgomery County Police Major Crimes Division, Mbengue and Fall were inside a red Tesla when an argument began. Both men exited the vehicle and continued fighting in the street before Fall allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot Mbengue.

Police said Fall fled the scene in the Tesla as witnesses called 911. Officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue arrived within minutes but were unable to save the victim.

Suspect captured in Laurel hours later

Investigators quickly identified Fall as the suspect and tracked him to his Laurel residence. Around 6 p.m., officers arrested him as he was driving away from his apartment.

Fall was taken to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, where he was charged with first-degree murder. He is currently awaiting a bond hearing.

Police have not released additional details about what led to the argument or the weapon used in the shooting. The investigation remains active.
