Kearny, NJ – A man was discovered dead near the intersection of Kearny Avenue and Johnston Avenue on Friday, moments before a fire broke out on the same block, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.
Officials confirmed that both the death and the blaze are under active investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office and the Kearny Police Department and at this point have not said whether or not the two incidents were related.
Emergency crews responded to the scene shortly after the initial report of the deceased male in the area.
As police began their investigation, a fire ignited nearby, prompting a response from Kearny firefighters who contained the flames before they spread to adjacent properties. Authorities have not released details on the cause of the fire or whether it is connected to the man’s death.
The identity of the victim is being withheld pending family notification. Law enforcement officers remained at the location into the evening, collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses as part of the ongoing inquiry. Officials said additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
