TRENTON, NJ – Former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman sharply criticized Donald Trump in a post Monday, calling the former president “a danger to our democracy” and accusing him of putting personal ego above national interest.
Whitman, who led New Jersey from 1994 to 2001 and later served as Environmental Protection Agency administrator under President George W. Bush, made the remarks on X, formerly known as Twitter, in response to Trump’s comments about actor and filmmaker Rob Reiner.
“Trump is a disgrace,” Whitman wrote. “Not only were his comments about Rob Reiner’s death extremely insensitive, they highlight his narcissism that foreign leaders know to exploit. Just flatter him & offer a business deal & you get what you want from the US. Trump is a danger to our democracy.”
Whitman has long been one of the most prominent Republican critics of Trump, breaking with the party’s leadership during and after his presidency. In recent years, she has aligned with centrist and pro-democracy coalitions, urging voters to reject extremism and protect democratic institutions.
Her latest remarks add to a growing list of warnings from former Republican officials who say Trump’s conduct and rhetoric continue to pose risks to the stability of American governance as the 2024 election cycle intensifies.
Trump’s campaign did not immediately respond to Whitman’s comments.
