NEWARK, NJ — Thomas Manzo, the ex-husband of a cast member from the “Real Housewives of New Jersey,” has been convicted on multiple charges after orchestrating an assault in exchange for a free wedding reception. U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger announced the conviction today following a trial in Newark federal court.
Manzo, 59, of Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, faced a jury over a two and a half week trial before U.S. District Judge Susan D. Wigenton. He was found guilty of committing a violent crime in aid of racketeering activity, conspiracy to commit a violent crime in aid of racketeering resulting in serious bodily injury, and falsifying and concealing documents related to a federal investigation.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, in spring 2015, Manzo hired John Perna, a soldier of the Lucchese Crime Family, to assault his ex-wife’s then-boyfriend. The attack, which occurred on July 18, 2015, resulted in significant injuries to the victim. In return for carrying out the assault, Perna was offered a lavish wedding reception at no cost at a venue owned by Manzo.
This criminal act, along with Manzo’s efforts to conceal documents pertaining to the wedding from a grand jury, led to his conviction.
The charges carry substantial penalties, including a maximum of 20 years in prison for the violent crime count and falsifying records, with an additional potential three years for the conspiracy charge. Sentencing is scheduled for October 15.
