Fort Myers Felon Sentenced To Prison For Possessing Loaded AR-15

FORT MYERS, FL – U.S. District Judge Thomas P. Barber has sentenced Kwameaine Rashad Brown (28, Fort Myers) to 6 years and 11 months in federal prison for possessing a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon. The court also ordered Brown to forfeit the firearm and 87 rounds of ammunition involved in the offense.   

Brown had pleaded guilty on December 21, 2020.

According to court documents, on the night of December 31, 2019, officers from the Fort Myers Police Department (FMPD) observed Brown on city surveillance cameras openly carrying a firearm and placing it in the trunk of a vehicle. Brown later entered the vehicle, which was subsequently stopped by FMPD officers patrolling the area. The firearm Brown had been holding was identified as a Springfield Armory Saint 5.56 mm AR-15 pistol, which was equipped with a high-capacity drum-style magazine and loaded with more than 80 rounds of ammunition.  At the time, Brown was a convicted felon and therefore prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition under federal law.

This case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the Fort Myers Police Department. It was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Simon R. Eth.

This case is also part of Project Guardian, the Department of Justice’s signature initiative to reduce gun violence and enforce federal firearms laws. Initiated by the Attorney General in the fall of 2019, Project Guardian draws upon the Department’s past successful programs to reduce gun violence and enhances coordination of federal, state, local, and tribal authorities in investigating and prosecuting gun crimes. He stated that his son had been drinking prior to the incident, during which an argument escalated after Nieves-Gonzalez broke a necklace. According to law enforcement, Nieves-Gonzalez also threatened to kill four children aged two to eleven who were present. He reportedly stated, “I’ll kill these kids, too,” while pointing the knife at them. Nieves-Gonzalez was booked into the Volusia County Jail on a $90,000 bond. His next court date is set for December 4.

  Mother and boyfriend arrested after toddler’s death from suspected abuse LIVE OAK, FL – A 33-year-old mother and her boyfriend have been arrested in connection with the death of her 2-year-old son. The child reportedly suffered from apparent head injuries and was found to be covered in bruises and cigarette burns. Christian Parnell and Curtis David Willey are charged with one count each of aggravated manslaughter of a child. If convicted, they face up to 30 years in state prison. Suwannee County deputies responded to a medical emergency about 3 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 13. Parnell reported that her son was unresponsive while CPR was being performed. First responders transported the boy to a local hospital, but he was pronounced dead at 4:10 p.m. Investigators noted swelling to the boy’s head and multiple bruises and scars on his body. In an interview, Parnell claimed her son received injuries from a fall at home 10 days prior, stating he was playing with Willey’s son. Parnell reported that the boy began to show symptoms of illness a week after the alleged fall. According to her, Willey called her at work on Oct. 13, stating they needed to take the child to the hospital. Before they could leave, the toddler began to vomit and lost consciousness. Willey stated he was in another room when the incident occurred. He claimed the boy seemed to be in decent health until Oct. 13, when the child displayed concerning symptoms. However, the severity and number of injuries were inconsistent with their explanations. Authorities stated that both defendants ignored the medical needs of the child, resulting in his death. They are being held without bond at the Suwannee County Jail, with additional charges pending. The couple’s actions have led to significant scrutiny from law enforcement. Police reported that Helton, 63, sent the message shortly after midnight on the same day. The text included a photo of a “large black and silver kitchen knife” along with a message that read, “I take that back I will kill both of you first.” Helton reportedly sent the message in a group text that included his wife and her friend. Helton’s wife informed police that she feared for her life after receiving the threat and stated she did not want to be near Helton. The complaint did not provide details regarding the context of the message or any prior history of threats or violence involving the couple. When police interviewed Helton, he admitted to sending both the photo and the accompanying message. Authorities noted that the image showed the kitchen knife on Helton’s lap, and he was dressed in the same clothing during the interview as he was in the photo. Helton has been charged with making a written threat to kill or do bodily harm. He was booked into jail on a $50,000 bond, which he posted on Sept. 30. A judge ordered that Helton not contact his wife, and he is set for arraignment on Nov. 3.   Woman claims self-defense in murder of ex-boyfriend’s new partner TAMARAC, FL – A woman accused of traveling from New York to Florida to murder her ex-boyfriend’s new partner took the stand in her defense on Monday. Sakiyna Thompson, 31, is currently on trial for the murder of 23-year-old Kayla Hodgson, who was allegedly stabbed multiple times. Thompson asserts that she acted in self-defense when she killed Hodgson at the victim’s apartment on July 13, 2022. According to reports, she claimed she intended to have a “woman-to-woman” conversation with Hodgson when the pair confronted each other. During her testimony, Thompson acknowledged that she killed Hodgson but maintained it was an act of self-defense. “I killed her because she took the glass from the hookah and slashed me across the stomach,” Thompson told jurors. Thompson indicated she blacked out and did not recall the attack sequence after the initial confrontation. She alleged that upon regaining her senses, she found herself holding the murder weapon and discovered Hodgson on the floor. Following the incident, Thompson reportedly changed into Hodgson’s clothes and attempted to clean the scene before fleeing. “I was walking in the blood,” she stated.
