Sunoco stop leads to 45K windfall for local father

BEREA, OH — A routine gas stop in Berea turned into a five-figure payday for a local father expecting his third child after he scanned a $5 EZPLAY Progressive Jackpot Lucky Numbers ticket and discovered he had hit a share of a six-figure prize.

Brian, of Berea, said he first went to the grocery store before stopping at Hirsh’s Sunoco at 455 West Bagley Rd. to fill up his tank. While there, he purchased an EZPLAY Progressive Jackpot Lucky Numbers ticket to pass time while his wife slept at home.

After placing a $5 wager, Brian scanned the ticket and learned he had won a portion of the jackpot.

According to the Ohio Lottery, his ticket displayed 15 “5’s,” making his Lucky 5’s wager worth 25% of the jackpot. The jackpot on February 10 stood at $182,465, awarding him $45,616.

After state and federal taxes totaling 26.75%, Brian will receive $33,416.72.

The overall odds of winning are 1 in 3.62, lottery officials said.

Brian said the timing of the win is significant as he and his wife are expecting their third child, a daughter, in July. He said the money will go toward purchasing their first home.

The Ohio Lottery reported it has contributed more than $34 billion to education since 1974. Additional information is available at ohiolottery.com/supportingeducation.

For Brian, what began as a quick stop for gas ended with a scanned ticket that changed his plans for the year.
