Baltimore, MD – A Prince George’s County woman chasing a growing jackpot turned a night out with her husband into a $50,000 win after missing the Powerball top prize by just one number.
The Greenbelt resident purchased five Powerball combinations for the February 16 drawing, when the jackpot had climbed to an estimated $154 million. While she did not hit all six numbers, she matched four of the five white balls plus the red Powerball, earning a third-tier prize of $50,000, according to the Maryland Lottery.
The couple bought their tickets while having drinks and dinner at American Legion Post 136 on Greenbelt Road. Both decided to play that evening as the multi-state jackpot continued to grow.
It was not until February 18 that the winning ticket was checked. The woman said her husband initially believed the ticket was worth $100, but when she scanned it using a mobile app, the screen indicated a $50,000 prize.

The winner claimed her prize February 20 at lottery headquarters in Baltimore. She told officials she regularly takes notice when Powerball and Mega Millions jackpots begin to increase.
Although she missed the $154 million jackpot by one number, she and her husband celebrated the win and later shared the news with their children.
