Silver Spring woman wins $50K Pick 5 prize after playing random number during errands
SILVER SPRING, MD — A trip to the store turned into a $50,000 payday for a Montgomery County woman who played a random set of numbers while buying groceries, only to find out days later she had hit the Maryland Lottery’s Pick 5 jackpot.
On Oct. 22, the Silver Spring resident stopped at the Aspen Hill Citgo on Georgia Avenue during errands and used spare change to buy a few Lottery tickets, including a $1 straight Pick 5 ticket with the numbers 43982. The number had simply popped into her head.
Days passed before she realized she’d won. She visited a Lottery retailer to check the ticket and was stunned to see that it matched all five winning digits exactly. Multiple scans confirmed she was holding a $50,000 winning ticket.
She claimed her prize at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore on Oct. 29. The winner said she plans to use the money to pay off bills and may consider purchasing a home. Her son accompanied her to claim the winnings.
The Citgo station that sold the ticket will receive a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the top-prize winning ticket.
