Hero Leonia school crossing guard struck by car again, recovering

LEONIA – Police in Leonia today reported that Charlie Lee, a school crossing guard that works at Leonia Middle School was struck by a car and rushed to the hospital Friday afternoon. Police said Mr. Lee was recovering and is hoping to be back at work on Monday.

“Yesterday during the afternoon dismissal at Leonia Middle School, crossing guard Charlie Lee was struck by a car. We have received a lot of inquiries on his condition and we are happy to report that he has no major injuries,” the department said. “Charlie is bruised and sore, but tells us he may be back at work on Monday. The cause of the accident is under investigation and sun glare may have been a contributing factor. Thank you for all of your support for Charlie and please use caution when driving through school zones.”

It’s not the first time Lee was struck by a car protecting children at his intersection.

In 2016, Lee was recognized for jumping in front of a speeding vehicle as a woman crossed the road with her 2-year-old in a stroller.

A year earlier, he was struck by an SUV while trying to shield children from a reckless driver.
