Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced today that Jovan Young, 29, has been charged with murder, attempted murder and other crimes for the deadly shooting last Saturday that killed a 10-year-old boy and injured another male inside a home in Edgemere, Queens.

District Attorney Katz said, “There isn’t a parent alive who doesn’t mourn this family’s loss, another tragic result from gun violence. The defendant allegedly fired repeatedly into an occupied house, is now in custody and faces justice in our Courts.”

Young, of Beach Channel Drive, Far Rockaway, was arraigned this afternoon before Queens Criminal Court Judge Toko Serita. The defendant is charged with murder in the second degree, attempted murder in the second degree, assault in the first degree and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree. Judge Serita set the defendant’s return date for June 14, 2021. If convicted, Young faces up 25 years-to-life in prison.

According to the charges, said DA Katz, on Saturday, June 5, 2021, at approximately 9:33 p.m., video surveillance allegedly shows the defendant approach a home on Beach 45^th Street and fire multiple shots directly into the residence. Bullets went through the entrance’s screen door striking two individuals inside the home. A bullet ripped into 10-year-old Justin Wallace’s abdomen. The boy’s 29-year-old uncle was hit twice – once in the neck and hand.

The District Attorney said the adult victim was rushed to a hospital and treated for the injuries. The youngster could not be saved and was pronounced dead.

The investigation was conducted by Detective Andre Figueiredo of the 101^st Precinct Detective Squad of the New York City Police Department, under the supervision of Lieutenant Courtney Cummings.

Assistant District Attorneys Kirk Sendlein and Joseph Grasso, with the assistance of Bryan Kotowski, all of the District Attorney’s Homicide Bureau, are prosecuting the case under the supervision of Assistant District Attorneys Peter J. McCormack III, Senior Deputy Bureau Chief, John W. Kosinski and Karen Ross, Deputy Bureau Chiefs, and under the overall supervision of Executive Assistant District Attorney for Major Crimes Daniel A. Saunders.
