Five $50K Powerball winners in Virginia as jackpot climbs to $1.5 billion
RICHMOND, VA – More than 87,000 Powerball tickets bought in Virginia won prizes in Wednesday’s drawing, including five tickets that each hit for $50,000, just one number short of landing the growing $1.5 billion jackpot.
The winning $50,000 tickets were sold at stores across the state: Food Lion in Exmore, Safeway in Fairfax, Tiger Market and Bakery in Alexandria, Fas Mart in Glen Allen, and Smoketown Shell in Woodbridge. Each matched four of the five white balls and the red Powerball.
No one across the country matched all six numbers in the December 17 drawing, pushing the grand prize for Saturday night’s draw to an estimated $1.5 billion. If hit, it would be one of the largest jackpots in Powerball history.
The Virginia Lottery confirmed that more than 87,000 tickets purchased in the Commonwealth won some type of prize in Wednesday’s draw, ranging from $4 to $50,000. The odds of winning any Powerball prize are 1 in 25, while the odds of hitting the jackpot are 1 in 292 million.
Powerball tickets are available at over 5,300 Virginia Lottery retailers and online via the Lottery’s mobile app. Proceeds from the game go toward K-12 public education in Virginia, with the Lottery contributing more than $901 million to schools during Fiscal Year 2025—about 10 percent of the state’s total K-12 budget.
The next Powerball drawing will take place Saturday at 10:59 p.m.
