Phoenix, AZ – A man has been charged with first-degree murder after he allegedly shot his girlfriend in the head during an argument and then transported her corpse to a Phoenix police station. Josue Barreras Anaya, 36, is accused of killing Jessica Guzman, 32, at his home on Tuesday morning.

Court documents indicate Anaya and Guzman were in his bedroom when a gun he kept under his pillow fell to the floor. The two began fighting, and Anaya claims Guzman attempted to grab the weapon, resulting in two gunshots, one of which struck Guzman in the head, killing her.

Instead of calling for help, Anaya reportedly wrapped Guzman’s body in a comforter and placed her in the bed of his GMC Sierra pickup truck. He drove to the Maryvale Estrella Mountain Precinct around 5 a.m. and flagged down police officers in the parking lot.

Police Sgt. Brian Bower remarked on the unusual nature of such an encounter for patrol officers. Anaya’s hands were tested for gunshot residue, and he answered some preliminary questions before requesting an attorney.

Family and friends of the victim expressed concern about Guzman’s past in a relationship filled with reported abuse. Her brother, David Guzman, previously attempted to help her escape what he described as an isolating relationship.

A GoFundMe campaign set up by her family describes Guzman as a beloved daughter, sister, and mother. Her son is said to have lost the most significant figure in his life, while her mother mourns not just a daughter but a vital support presence.

Anaya remains in custody with a $1 million bond and was still detained as of Thursday.
