Pedestrian killed in Minnesota Avenue crash struck by WMATA bus and fleeing pickup
Washington, DC – A 29-year-old man was fatally struck early Wednesday morning in Northeast DC after falling into the roadway and being hit by a WMATA bus, then struck again by a pickup truck that fled the scene, police said.
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 3:51 a.m. on November 26 in the 4200 block of Minnesota Avenue NE. Sixth District officers responded along with DC Fire and EMS, who pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene after lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful.
The victim was identified as Jal Chuol Pinuieny, 29, who had no fixed address.
According to the preliminary investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit, Pinuieny had fallen into the northbound lanes of Minnesota Avenue. A WMATA bus then struck him. The bus driver remained on scene, immediately called 911, and began directing traffic with the help of a witness.
During those efforts, an unknown pickup truck failed to yield, ran over the victim, and fled the scene without stopping.
Police are now searching for the driver of the pickup and asking the public for any information. The WMATA bus driver is cooperating with the investigation.
