DC man murdered in late-night 9th Street SE ambush

WASHINGTON, DC — A man was shot dead late Sunday night on the 3800 block of 9th Street Southeast, sending shock through the neighborhood as police launched a homicide investigation and offered a cash reward for answers.

At approximately 10:18 p.m. on Sunday, officers from the Seventh District arrived to find 30-year-old Simon Getachew, of Northwest DC, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. DC Fire and EMS determined Getachew had no signs of life and pronounced him dead at the scene.

The fatal shooting unfolded on a residential block just off Alabama Avenue SE, a corridor that has seen multiple gun incidents in recent months. Police have not said whether Getachew was targeted or if there was a possible motive, and no arrests have been made.

Detectives spent the night interviewing potential witnesses and collecting forensic evidence, but the investigation remains ongoing. The Metropolitan Police Department is urging anyone with information to come forward, offering a reward of up to $25,000 for tips that lead to an arrest and conviction.

Tipsters can call (202) 727-9099 or send anonymous information via the Department’s Text Tip Line by texting 50411.
