ESSEX, MD – A man was shot and killed by Baltimore County police Wednesday night after officers responded to a stabbing inside an apartment complex on Holgate Drive, authorities said.

The confrontation unfolded around 8:30 p.m. after a disturbance call was upgraded to a stabbing while officers were on the way.

When officers entered the 900 block of Holgate Drive, they encountered an armed man inside the building, police said.

Officers open fire after confrontation

According to investigators, multiple officers discharged their weapons during the encounter, striking the armed man. Inside the apartment, officers found an adult woman suffering from apparent stab wounds. Both were treated at the scene before being taken to a nearby hospital, where the man was later pronounced dead.

Police said one officer was also injured during the incident and taken to a hospital for treatment. The extent of the officer’s injuries was not disclosed.

Investigations under way by state and county units

The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the police shooting, as required by state law. Meanwhile, Baltimore County Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit is investigating the stabbing that prompted the call.

All officers involved were wearing body-worn cameras and have been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigations, police said.

Authorities have not yet released the names of the man or woman involved.
