BALTIMORE, MD – Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown today commended the U.S. Supreme Court for its unanimous decision to maintain broad access to the abortion pill, Mifepristone. The ruling rejected a challenge against the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) regulation of the drug, which was supported by a coalition of over two dozen state attorneys general, including Brown.
The legal challenge, initiated by a group of doctors and organizations, was aimed at questioning the FDA’s endorsement of Mifepristone as safe and effective. The coalition’s amicus briefs to the Supreme Court argued in favor of the FDA’s findings, which are based on more than two decades of medical use, and supported regulatory decisions such as the approval of its generic versions and adjustments to its distribution methods.
Attorney General Brown underscored the significance of the decision, stating, “The Supreme Court’s rejection of this lawsuit is a major victory for the right to choose here in Maryland and across the country.” He highlighted the potential impact restricted access could have had on diverse and underserved communities, including people of color, low-income individuals, LGBTQIA+ members, rural residents, and people with disabilities.
Brown reassured Maryland residents of his continued vigilance and commitment to defending reproductive rights, recognizing the ongoing challenges that could threaten these freedoms. “While this battle is won, we know that there are challenges looming that could threaten the reproductive freedoms we cherish here in Maryland. I will continue to take this fight wherever it leads,” he affirmed.
