ALLEGANY COUNTY, Md. — A Maryland man has been arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including possession of an explosive device, after allegedly breaking into a Barton residence early Monday morning. The arrest followed a joint investigation by the Maryland State Police and the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
The incident occurred around 1 a.m. on Nov. 11, when state troopers responded to reports of a break-in at a home in the 20300 block of Lower Georges Creek Road. Authorities say Andrew Ervin Romack, 62, forced his way into the residence of his estranged girlfriend. Upon arrival, troopers apprehended Romack and, during a search of the property, discovered suspected improvised explosive devices.
The State Fire Marshal’s Bomb Squad was called to the scene to assess the devices. Bomb technicians conducted diagnostics and determined that immediate render-safe procedures were necessary to neutralize the potential threat posed by the devices. No injuries were reported during the incident.
Acting State Fire Marshal Jason M. Mowbray commended the quick actions of the responding officers. “The quick recognition of the potential hazard with this device by the responding troopers and their decision to immediately contact us was appropriate in this incident,” Mowbray said, emphasizing the importance of vigilance in reporting suspicious activity.
Following the incident, a thorough search of both the property and Romack’s vehicle was conducted, and no additional explosive materials were found. Romack was subsequently transported to the Allegany County Detention Center, where he is being held without bond.
Romack faces charges including manufacturing and possessing a destructive device, fourth-degree burglary, trespassing, reckless endangerment, and possession of an explosive device with intent. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive, and no further details have been provided on his relationship to the alleged victim.
