Maryland woman hits $50K jackpot on first lottery try

Hagerstown woman wins $50K on first-ever Maryland Lottery ticket

Hagerstown, MD – A Washington County homemaker’s decision to play the Maryland Lottery for the first time led to a $50,000 windfall after she hit the top prize on a Bonus Match 5 ticket — with nothing more than a gut feeling.

The woman, whose name has not been released, picked up a quick-pick Bonus Match 5 ticket from Byers Stop ’N’ Go at 152 North Burhans Boulevard in Hagerstown for the July 31 drawing. She had never played the game — or any Maryland Lottery ticket — before.

Days later, while at home, she asked her husband to check the numbers. He was stunned to see the ticket matched the top prize. She didn’t believe him at first and needed convincing before finally accepting the reality: she had won $50,000 on her first try.

She claimed her prize Tuesday at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. After the initial disbelief wore off, the longtime homemaker of 22 years said she plans to put the winnings into savings.

Byers Stop ’N’ Go will receive a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the winning ticket.

Bonus Match 5 is a nightly draw game that gives players the chance to win a $50,000 top prize for just $1 per play.
