Trenton, NJ –New Jersey Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill announced her nomination of Shirley Emehelu to serve as New Jersey’s next state comptroller, describing the veteran attorney as a trusted colleague and a champion of government transparency and accountability.
Emehelu, who previously held positions at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey and the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General, is widely regarded for her experience in public integrity and financial oversight. Sherrill said those credentials make her “a key partner in delivering on the goal of bringing transparency and accountability to Trenton.”
“I know Shirley well from our time together at the U.S. Attorney’s Office,” Sherrill said in her announcement. “She will bring a focus on public service, integrity, and fairness to the Comptroller’s Office to ensure that government is working for you.”
The comptroller oversees audits of state agencies, local governments, and independent authorities to identify waste and inefficiency in the use of taxpayer funds. Emehelu’s nomination will proceed through the formal confirmation process before the New Jersey State Senate.
