NEW CASTLE, DE – A late-night gunfire incident on the Jack Markell Trail has sparked a criminal investigation after troopers discovered shell casings along the popular path early Friday morning.

Just after midnight, Delaware State Police responded to a report of shots fired near the intersection of Robinson Drive and West Minuit Drive. With assistance from the New Castle County Police Department, troopers located spent shell casings behind a residence that backs up to the trail.

According to preliminary findings, a witness reported seeing an unknown person fleeing eastbound on a motorbike shortly after the shots rang out. No injuries or property damage have been reported, and police say surveillance footage is currently unavailable.

The Troop 2 Criminal Investigations Unit is leading the investigation and has not released any suspect descriptions. The motive and target remain unknown, and authorities are asking for public assistance.
