Governor slams Chicago Teachers Union tribute to convicted cop killer

Trenton, NJ – Governor Phil Murphy blasted the Chicago Teachers Union after the group posted a tribute honoring Assata Shakur, the fugitive convicted in the 1973 murder of New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster.

The union’s social media post praised Shakur as a “revolutionary fighter” and “leader of freedom,” sparking outrage from state leaders in New Jersey.

Governor Murphy condemns tribute

Murphy called the statement “shameful and depraved,” pointing directly to Shakur’s conviction for the execution-style killing of Foerster during a traffic stop on the New Jersey Turnpike. “There are so many worthy heroes to celebrate,” Murphy wrote. “She is not one of them.”

Shakur’s conviction and escape

Shakur, born JoAnne Chesimard, was convicted in 1977 for her role in the trooper’s death. She later escaped prison in 1979 with the help of armed accomplices and fled to Cuba, where she remains a fugitive on the FBI’s most wanted list. The U.S. government has offered a $2 million reward for her capture.

The Chicago Teachers Union’s post drew criticism nationwide, with many pointing to Shakur’s conviction and fugitive status. Supporters of Foerster’s family and law enforcement groups joined Murphy in condemning the tribute, arguing it dishonored the memory of fallen officers.
