TRENTON, NJ – A tragic motor vehicle collision involving an on-duty Franklin Borough police officer led to the death of a female civilian passenger. The crash took place on Monday near the intersection of State Route 23 and Walsh Road in Franklin Borough, Sussex County.

The incident occurred around 10:41 AM when a police department vehicle collided with a civilian vehicle. A female passenger in the civilian vehicle sustained life-threatening injuries and later died; she was pronounced deceased at 12:45 AM on Wednesday at Morristown Medical Center.

The male driver of the civilian vehicle received treatment and was released, while the officer involved suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Under a 2019 law, the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office is required to investigate any civilian deaths that occur during interactions with law enforcement. This case will be presented to a grand jury to determine whether evidence supports an indictment against the involved officer. The identities of those involved are currently withheld.
