Murphy hints at White House ambitions as he exits New Jersey stage
Trenton, NJ – Outgoing New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy is leaving office with a hint of possibility that his political career may not be over.
Asked in an interview whether he plans to run for president in 2028, Murphy said he “hasn’t taken anything off the table.”
The two-term Democrat, whose tenure ends next month, suggested that while a presidential run is not imminent, his future could still involve public service.
Murphy signals pause, not retirement
Murphy told interviewer that he plans to “take some time off, go off the grid for a few months, recharge, reload, and then we’ll see where we go from there.” He added that both he and his wife, First Lady Tammy Murphy, have “loved public service” and would likely remain connected to it in some capacity.
I haven’t taken anything off the table, but if you’re a betting man, Bill, I wouldn’t put a lot of money on that. We’re going to take some time off, go off the grid for a few months, recharge, reload, and then we’ll see where we go from there. I’ve loved public service. So has my wife. I’ll be shocked if that’s not part of our future,” Murphy said.
Murphy’s statement follows months of speculation about his national ambitions, fueled by his chairmanship of the National Governors Association and an active presence in Democratic fundraising circles. His decision not to rule out a presidential campaign keeps him in the conversation as Democrats begin looking toward 2028.
A legacy of progressive policy
During his two terms, Murphy positioned New Jersey as a testing ground for extreme progressive economic and social policies, from expanding paid family leave to legalizing recreational marijuana. He also guided the state through the COVID-19 pandemic, an era that defined much of his leadership and solidified his national visibility.
Murphy leaves office with approval ratings in the mid-40s and a reputation as a pragmatic but liberal governor willing to blend Wall Street experience with public priorities.
