New jersey home squatter facing charges in monmouth county

FREEHOLD, NJ—Markies L. Wells, also known as Messiah Law-Elbey, faces numerous criminal charges after falsely claiming ownership of two vacant properties. Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago detailed that Wells, 39, from Neptune Township, faces charges including armed burglary and theft, following his recent arrests at these locations.

The initial arrest occurred in March when Wells was discovered living in an abandoned home on Pine View Avenue in Keansburg, having entered through a back window and changed the locks.

A subsequent July incident involved a similar situation in a foreclosed home on Middletown Road in Holmdel, where Wells and his three dogs caused considerable interior damage.

During his arrest, Wells was found with a knife and made threats against law enforcement officers. He remains detained at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution as his cases continue.

Further investigations led to additional charges last week for filing false documents with the Monmouth County Clerk’s Office, claiming ownership of both homes.

The case is under the jurisdiction of Assistant Prosecutor Kristen Anastos of the MCPO Financial Crimes/Special Prosecutions Unit. Details regarding Wells’ legal representation are currently unavailable.
