U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi issued a sweeping directive Monday emphasizing federal protections for parents who speak out against school policies, declaring that violations of constitutional rights in education will be met with legal action.
In a memo sent to FBI Director Kash Patel and all 93 U.S. Attorneys, Bondi said her office is committed to defending parents’ First Amendment rights and their authority over their children’s moral and religious education.
“Recent years have seen a disturbing trend in which state and local authorities have brought radical gender and racial ideology into our public schools while suppressing dissenting viewpoints,” Bondi wrote. “Worse still, they have ignored, dismissed, and even retaliated against concerned parents.”
The memo directs the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division and U.S. Attorneys nationwide to monitor cases where parents are threatened, harassed, or penalized for speaking at school board meetings or objecting to classroom materials. Bondi cited federal statutes, including conspiracy against rights laws, that could apply if school officials act unlawfully against parents.
Bondi also reinforced parents’ right to exempt their children from lessons that conflict with religious beliefs, particularly on sexuality and gender. Schools receiving federal funds, she said, must honor such exemptions or face scrutiny from the Justice Department.
The directive marks a reversal from a previous administration memo that categorized certain heated school board confrontations as potential domestic terrorism threats. Bondi stated that while schools must maintain order, “such authority cannot be used as a pretext to silence dissent or punish parents for expressing their views.”
The Attorney General closed by pledging that the DOJ “stands with America’s parents” and will “restore the rule of law” in education disputes.
