NEW JERSEY – In a tense showdown on Capitol Hill, New Jersey Senators Andy Kim and Cory Booker stood firm in their opposition to a controversial government funding bill, casting “no” votes in a bid to halt what they described as a dangerous surrender of congressional power.
Despite their efforts, the measure—labeled by critics as a “hyper-partisan” capitulation to the Trump administration—passed the Senate late Friday evening, averting a government shutdown but sparking outrage among its detractors.
The bill, which congressional Republicans billed as a “Continuing Resolution” to keep the government funded, drew sharp criticism from Senators Kim and Booker, who argued it went far beyond a routine budgetary stopgap. In a statement, Senator Booker rejected the characterization outright, declaring, “I will not support what congressional Republicans are calling a ‘Continuing Resolution’ because it’s not. It is a surrendering of the powers of Congress to the president and Elon Musk.” Booker’s remarks pointed to concerns over the influence of billionaire Elon Musk, a prominent figure in the Trump orbit, whose role in shaping policy has become a lightning rod in recent debates.
Senator Kim echoed these sentiments, framing the bill as a betrayal of American families in favor of wealthy elites.
“This hyper-partisan funding bill is a setback for our country and a win for the millionaires and billionaires the Trump administration is working for,” Kim said. He highlighted the broader implications of the vote, warning that “as Republicans gear up to gut Medicaid and take money from our schools, this can and will not be the last time this Congress has the chance to stand up against this lawlessness.”
Kim claimed the stakes for vulnerable communities, particularly in New Jersey, where constituents have voiced alarm over potential cuts to social programs.
Despite the impassioned resistance from Kim, Booker, and a number of Democrat senators, their attempt to derail the bill fell short.
The Senate vote, finalized just hours before a midnight deadline, saw the measure pass with bipartisan support, though the exact tally remained fluid as negotiations continued into the evening. The outcome handed a victory to President Donald Trump, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and their allies, who hailed the bill as a necessary compromise to keep government operations running.
Kim, however, struck a defiant tone in the aftermath, signaling that the fight was far from over. “As President Trump, Elon Musk, and Speaker Johnson celebrate dismantling so much of what truly makes our country great, I’m focused on how we heal our country and deliver for Americans’ needs,” he said. He also acknowledged the outpouring of public concern, noting, “To the thousands of New Jerseyans and people across the country who called my office and any office this week, know that I heard you and as we keep standing up to these power grabs I will always be listening.”
The passage of the bill has intensified an already polarized political climate, with social media posts from X reflecting a mix of frustration and resolve among New Jersey residents. Some praised Kim and Booker for their principled stance, while others expressed dismay at the Senate’s inability to block what they see as an overreach by the Trump administration. The debate has also fueled speculation about the role of influential figures like Musk, whose growing presence in policy discussions has unsettled traditional power dynamics in Washington.
