NEWARK, NJ – The Associated Humane Societies (AHS) is urgently seeking foster homes after heavy snow from a recent storm caused the roof of a neighboring business to collapse onto the shelter’s rear kennels, severely damaging the structure and displacing more than 30 dogs.
Shelter officials said the loss of the kennels has created a critical space shortage as AHS Newark was already operating at capacity. “This sudden loss of kennel space is devastating,” the shelter shared in a public appeal.

AHS is asking for immediate foster help, particularly for dogs weighing 40 pounds or more. Temporary foster placements of two to four weeks are needed while repairs are underway. The organization will provide all necessary supplies and support.
“We have dogs suited for many different households — dog-friendly, kid-friendly, and more,” staff said, emphasizing that each foster placement directly saves a life.
Rescue groups and individuals willing to assist are encouraged to apply online at ahscares.org/become-a-foster or contact Rescue Coordinator Sherri Laraway at slaraway@ahsppz.org.
