TRENTON, NJ – The Attorney General’s Office announced an investigation into a tragic crash in Southampton Township, Burlington County, resulting in the death of a civilian. The incident, involving a New Jersey State Police (NJSP) vehicle, occurred on Tuesday, leading to the fatality of one adult male. The identity of the deceased is yet to be disclosed.

The preliminary findings reveal that the crash happened during routine patrol duties by an on-duty state trooper on State Route 70. His marked NJSP vehicle collided with a civilian motorcycle near Burrs Mill Road.

Following the accident, the motorcyclist was taken to Virtua Mount Holly Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries around 12:45 p.m. The involved state trooper did not suffer significant injuries.

Under a 2019 law, the Attorney General’s Office is mandated to investigate deaths occurring during an encounter with law enforcement officers or while the deceased was in custody.

This investigation is to be presented to a grand jury to decide on the indictment of the officers involved.
