ROCHESTER, NY – The Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester, New York, has announced the birth of its second giraffe calf in just a week, a female named Pippi, born to mother Iggy on December 13. Pippi’s distinctive ossicones, resembling the pigtails of the fictional character Pippi Longstocking, inspired her name.
This birth follows closely after another giraffe at the zoo, Kipenzi, gave birth to a male calf named Parker Jr., also known as PJ. Intriguingly, both calves share the same father, Parker, a giraffe who passed away in February 2023.
The zoo confirmed that both mothers and their calves are thriving in a behind-the-scenes area, ensuring their well-being and privacy during this critical early stage of the calves’ lives. The arrival of these giraffe calves represents a significant event for the zoo and its conservation efforts.
