Newport News, VA – A 21-year-old man has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder following a shooting last week on Jefferson Avenue that left a 19-year-old dead and another man critically injured.
Officers responded Tuesday at approximately 5:03 p.m. to the 10600 block of Jefferson Avenue for reports of gunfire. When they arrived, they located two adult males suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
One of the victims, identified as 19-year-old Taurion Reed, later died from his injuries that evening. The second victim survived. Authorities have not released additional details about his condition.
On Sunday, Newport News Police announced the arrest of 21-year-old Jacquese Ihienkonye in connection with the case.
Arrest made days after fatal shooting
Investigators took Ihienkonye, a Newport News resident, into custody following what police described as an ongoing investigation into the Jefferson Avenue shooting.
He has been charged with first-degree murder, robbery, conspiracy to commit felony, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Police have not disclosed a possible motive or the circumstances leading up to the gunfire.
The homicide marks another active case for the department’s major crimes unit as detectives continue to review evidence and interview witnesses tied to the Newport News homicide investigation.
