Trenton, NJ – A multi-agency law enforcement sweep across New Jersey and New York has led to the arrest of nine convicted sex offenders who failed to comply with Megan’s Law registration requirements, officials announced.
The arrests were part of Phase 2 of Operation White Butterfly, a coordinated enforcement effort led by the New Jersey State Police in collaboration with the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, U.S. Marshals NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force, and multiple specialized state units including the Fugitive Unit, Criminal Records Integrity and Compliance Unit, Human Trafficking Unit, and K9 Unit.
Launched to target non-compliant sex offenders, the operation aimed to locate individuals who had evaded mandatory registration or failed to update their status as required under Megan’s Law. All nine individuals were apprehended over the course of the enforcement initiative.
Officials emphasized that the mission of Operation White Butterfly goes beyond arrest numbers. The initiative reaffirms law enforcement’s dedication to protecting vulnerable populations and holding offenders accountable for violations of post-conviction legal obligations.
Megan’s Law, enacted in 1994, mandates community notification and registration for sex offenders to monitor their movements and ensure public safety. Authorities say continued enforcement of the law is essential to preserving its integrity and honoring the memory of Megan Kanka, for whom the law is named.
