NJ Transit suspends rail, bus service Monday amid heavy snow

Newark, NJ – Commuter platforms sat empty Monday morning as NJ Transit suspended all rail, bus, and light rail service statewide, citing heavy snow accumulation and safety concerns for riders and employees.

The systemwide shutdown took effect Monday as a winter storm continued to impact travel across New Jersey. NJ Transit announced that rail, bus, light rail, and Access Link services are suspended and will remain offline until conditions allow for a gradual and safe restoration of service.

In a statement posted to social media, the agency said crews are actively clearing snow from platforms and facilities throughout the system. Officials said updates will be shared as conditions improve and service restoration plans are finalized.

All modes impacted across the state

The suspension includes NJ TRANSIT Rail, Bus, Newark Light Rail, Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, River LINE, and Access Link services. Officials said no timeline has been established for resumption, emphasizing that operations will restart only when it is safe to do so.

Rail service remains fully suspended, and cross-honoring between Hoboken and New York via PATH and NY Waterway Ferry has also been halted during the shutdown. Bus operations across all routes are suspended, along with light rail service in Newark and along the Hudson-Bergen and River LINE corridors.

Access Link service for riders with disabilities has also been paused until weather conditions improve.

  • No timeline announced for gradual service restoration
  • Cross-honoring between Hoboken and New York also suspended

Despite the passenger service halt, NJ Transit said some trains and light rail vehicles may still be seen operating. Those movements are for operational purposes, including keeping overhead wires and tracks clear of snow and ice.

Storm response and travel guidance

Officials urged motorists and pedestrians to remain alert around rail crossings, noting that equipment may continue moving throughout the railroad and light rail systems even during the service suspension. Drivers are instructed to obey crossing gates at all times, and pedestrians are advised to use only designated crossings.

The agency attributed the shutdown to significant snow accumulation and said the decision was made out of caution for customers and employees.
