Ocean City couple’s lottery routine lands massive win

Ocean City couple’s scratch-off system hits $50K jackpot on crossword ticket

OCEAN CITY, MD — A married couple from Ocean City just turned a $5 Maryland Lottery scratch-off into a $50,000 payday thanks to a winning system — he buys the tickets, she scratches them.

The husband picked up the Deluxe Crossword 10th Edition ticket at the Royal Farms located at 10633 Ocean Gateway in Berlin and brought it home, sticking to their tried-and-true routine. After scratching off the ticket, the wife uncovered the eight winning words — air, arc, arid, cape, fawn, idle, knead, and urn — landing them one of the game’s top prizes.

Once she confirmed the win, she handed the ticket back to her husband, who claimed the prize at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore on Thursday. The man, who works in construction, said the arrangement works well for them — especially during moments when he finds himself in the doghouse.

To celebrate the unexpected windfall, the couple went out for dinner at Waterman’s Seafood in West Ocean City.

The retailer that sold the ticket, Royal Farms in Berlin, will receive a $500 bonus for selling the top-prize winner.

The Deluxe Crossword 10th Edition scratch-off game launched less than a month ago with eight $50,000 top prizes. After this win, seven remain unclaimed, along with tens of thousands of smaller prizes ranging from $5 to $10,000.
