OCEAN COUNTY, N.J. — Longtime Ocean County Commissioner Ginny Haines will not seek re-election this year, marking the final removal of those who opposed Ocean County GOP Chairman George Gilmore.
Haines, once a close ally of Gilmore, had aligned with Republicans who sought to block his return to power following his federal tax-related conviction. Since being pardoned by former President Donald Trump, Gilmore has systematically replaced his opponents in the party.
Without the chairman’s endorsement, Haines faced little chance of securing the nomination. Like others before her, she opted to step aside rather than mount a losing campaign.
In an email to Gilmore and the party’s executive director, Haines confirmed her decision:
“Initially, I was going to run for re-election but after many conversations with family and friends, I have decided not to run. I will be finishing my 10th year on the Board and have had the honor of serving the people of Ocean County in many capacities and have enjoyed every minute. I wish those who are now serving and those who will serve in the future the very best in representing Ocean County.”
Gilmore dismissed any suggestion that Haines’ withdrawal was part of a deal, adding, “She’s probably going to work on Jack Ciattarelli’s losing campaign.”
With Haines out, Gilmore is backing Sam Ellenbogen, a leader of the Toms River Jewish Community Council, as the county’s first Orthodox Jewish candidate for commissioner. Ellenbogen’s running mate has not been finalized, but former Egg Harbor Township Committeeman Ray Gormley is expected to join the ticket.
Tom Gormley received $10.5 million from the county in 2023 for Shooters Sporting Center, now a public shooting range that remains off-limits to the general public.
Haines’ exit cements Gilmore’s control over the Ocean County GOP, completing his purge of former rivals.
