Radio ad sparks $20K Mega Millions win for Streetsboro man on spontaneous ticket buy

STREETSBORO, OH — A Streetsboro man turned a casual radio broadcast into a $20,000 Mega Millions® win after a spur-of-the-moment decision to play the lottery while driving led to a lucky ticket.

The winner was on the road when he heard a reporter mention how high the Mega Millions jackpot had climbed. Inspired by the broadcast, he stopped at Sammy’s Food Mart at 9418 State Route 43 and spent $20 on a ticket. When he checked his numbers the following day, he scanned the ticket and was stunned to see a claim slip print out — confirming his win.

After required state and federal withholding of 27.125%, he will take home $14,575. He told lottery officials he plans to use part of the winnings to take a trip this coming spring.

Mega Millions is a multi-state lottery game drawn twice weekly, on Tuesdays and Fridays at 11:00 p.m. in Ohio. Each $5 ticket includes an automatic Multiplier feature, which can increase the prize amount depending on the drawing.

Sammy’s Food Mart, where the winning ticket was sold, is a frequent stop for local players. The win adds to a growing list of prizes awarded in Portage County this year.

The Ohio Lottery has contributed more than $34 billion to education statewide since 1974.
