Ohio police officer dies after ambush shooting that injured two others

LORAIN, OH — Officer Phillip Wagner, 35, of the Lorain Police Department died Thursday following an ambush-style shooting that left one officer critically injured and another wounded, authorities confirmed.

Wagner and two fellow officers were responding to a call when they were met with gunfire from a suspect parked at the end of a dead-end street. The assailant opened fire without warning, striking all three officers.

Wagner died one day after the shooting. A second officer remains in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds, while the third officer is recovering after being shot in the hand. The suspect was fatally shot when officers returned fire.

Wagner, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, joined the Lorain Police Department in 2022 after previous law enforcement service. Earlier this week, he earned his SWAT certification after completing a year of training.
