Niskayuna man arrested for making social media threats against local officials
SCHENECTADY, NY – Detectives arrested 40-year-old Subhash Sukhram after an investigation found social media posts that threatened a Schenectady City Council member, a Schenectady County legislator and those who vote for them, leading to criminal charges and booking at county jail.
Sukhram, a resident of Niskayuna, was taken into custody following an inquiry by Schenectady Police Department detectives into online threats directed at two local public officials. The department’s news release said the investigation identified posts that rose to the level of criminal harassment and a threat of mass harm.
He was charged with two counts of aggravated harassment in the second degree, classified as A misdemeanors, and one count of making a threat of mass harm, a B misdemeanor. Officers booked Sukhram at Schenectady Police Department headquarters and transported him to the Schenectady County Jail, the release said.
Detectives opened the probe after monitoring social media activity that referenced the targeted officials and their supporters. The department’s public notice did not identify the officials by name and provided no additional detail about the content of the posts or any alleged plan to carry out harm.
Sukhram’s arrest follows standard procedure for online threats against public servants, the release stated, and the case will proceed through the county’s criminal justice system. No further information about arraignment, bail or court dates was included in the department’s announcement.
The department posted the news release on its official social accounts and on Facebook, where it said detectives completed the investigation and made the arrest. The Schenectady Police Department did not provide additional comment beyond the release.
