ST. CLAIR TOWNSHIP, PA – A shocking family tragedy has unfolded in a Pennsylvania courtroom, where prosecutors say a woman and her accomplice orchestrated the execution-style murder of her 71-year-old mother amid a bitter custody dispute over a special-needs child.
Melissa Fox-Beacom, 51, and Matthew Jason Bates, 20, are standing trial for the killing of Fox-Beacom’s mother, Alice Robson, who was found dead in her St. Clair Township home after being shot twice in the head. Both defendants face charges of homicide, conspiracy, and solicitation.
According to prosecutors, Fox-Beacom recruited an 18-year-old man, Robert Patrick Jack, to carry out the killing. Bates allegedly provided Jack with the firearm and assisted in hiding Robson’s body in a crawl space beneath her home. The crime, investigators say, was driven by Fox-Beacom’s fury over her mother’s custody of her special-needs grandson.
During opening statements, prosecutors told jurors that Fox-Beacom made her intentions clear when she allegedly told Jack, “We need you to put a fat cow down,” referring to her mother.
Custody battle turned deadly
At the time of the murder, Robson was the full-time caregiver for Fox-Beacom’s son, who required 24-hour supervision. The tension between the two women reportedly escalated over Robson’s legal guardianship, leading Fox-Beacom to enlist Bates — then her daughter’s boyfriend — and Jack to commit the crime on December 11, 2023.
Court documents and testimony presented by the St. Clair Township Police Department detail how Jack allegedly entered Robson’s home and fatally shot her before Bates helped conceal the body. The case shocked the quiet Pittsburgh suburb, where residents described Robson as a devoted grandmother and caretaker.
Prosecutors said Bates has agreed to testify against Fox-Beacom and Jack as part of his cooperation with the investigation, though he “will still be held accountable for his actions.” The trial is ongoing in Allegheny County, where jurors are expected to hear graphic testimony and review crime scene evidence throughout the week.
