SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — The cancelation of Halloween in the name of equity, equality, and fairness was too much, even for New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy to handle on Wednesday.

“Seriously? We can’t let kids celebrate Halloween? Give me a break,” Murphy tweeted after hearing that the South Orange and Maplewood School District has announced the cancellation of all Halloween-themed events during school hours to foster an inclusive environment.

The move aims to address concerns related to financial hardship, cultural sensitivity, and the values of equity and access within the school community. SOMSD Superintendent Dr. Ronald Taylor communicated the decision in a letter outlining three questions the district used to guide their decision-making process.

These questions touched on family financial burdens, the cultural and religious impact of Halloween activities, and aligning such activities with SOMSD’s values.

After conducting internal research, the district enacted new procedures that disallow Halloween-themed events and costumes during school hours. Schools are, however, free to partner with Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs), Home and School Associations (HSAs), or other external organizations to host themed events after school.

Additionally, Dr. Taylor indicated that SOMSD is exploring the possibility of introducing Fall/Harvest Festival events or activities that can be held during school hours on October 31st. Some schools have already begun planning such events, expected to roll out by 2024.

While the decision may generate debate within the community, Dr. Taylor emphasized that the changes align with SOMSD’s goals of promoting equity, fostering inclusion, and creating a sense of belonging among all students and staff.
