BARNEGAT, N.J. – A 67-year-old Barnegat man has been charged with murder after his wife was found dead inside their Windward Drive home Monday evening, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced Tuesday.
William Garvin is charged in the death of his wife, Eileen Garvin, 69. Barnegat Township police responding to a reported domestic violence incident found her body on the floor and William Garvin seated in a chair with a knife protruding from his chest, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.

Police Called to Barnegat Home Monday Evening
Officers were sent to the Windward Drive residence at approximately 6:30 p.m. Monday for what authorities described as a domestic violence incident.
Police entered the home and found Eileen Garvin dead on the floor. William Garvin was found nearby with a knife wound to his chest.
He was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, where prosecutors said he was in stable condition when the charge was announced.
Investigators with the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Barnegat Township Police Department and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit then began investigating what happened inside the home.
That investigation led detectives to conclude that William Garvin was responsible for his wife’s death, according to the prosecutor’s office. Detectives also determined that his knife wound was self-inflicted.
Murder Charge Filed While Garvin Remains Hospitalized
Garvin was charged with murder Tuesday and served with a complaint-warrant while hospitalized.
He is expected to be transferred to the Ocean County Jail after doctors release him. Prosecutors said he will remain there pending a detention hearing.
Billhimer credited the Major Crime Unit, Barnegat police, Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit and Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office for their work on the investigation.
The prosecutor’s announcement did not disclose how Eileen Garvin died or what investigators believe led to the violence. No additional charges were announced Tuesday.
The case adds another major criminal investigation to recent Ocean County crime and public-safety coverage, with the homicide investigation now moving from the initial police response into the court process.
